Here, too, the planners were not expected to come up with any conventional solutions, but creative concepts. Not only the planned building was complex, but the ground on which it was to be built: a contaminated site with unknown subsidence behaviour. S+M Architekten AG constructed a factory building (100 m long and 50 m wide) whose steel binding can be adjusted if the ground should sink at any time. This fulfilled the requirements for the principal’s innovative use concept since bulky building goods can be sorted in it and material stored temporarily. Combustible building waste is incinerated in a special waste-wood furnace producing 2.5 MW of green electricity. The striking silhouette along the lines of “form follows function” demonstrates in no uncertain terms that this is the very latest biomass power plant in Europe.
